The skateurs

In front of the Lyon National Opera, Place Tolozan vibrates with a very different energy than on performance nights. Here, wheels click on the cobblestones, skateboards rise in a gentle breeze, and young skaters defy gravity with the same audacity as the artists taking to the stage a few meters away.

The Lyon Opera House watches over them like a grand, living backdrop. Its façade blends history and modernity, just like this young Lyonnais who effortlessly move from skateboarding tricks to long tables at traditional Lyonnais restaurants. For in Lyon, art isn’t confined to red curtains and orchestras: it’s also found in the conviviality of a shared meal, in the laughter that echoes around a steaming quenelle or a glass of Beaujolais.

After the jumps and slides of Place Tolozan, many like to head to Café des Fédérations, a Lyon institution since 1872. There, generations mingle: the older generation recounts the city of yesteryear, while the younger generation imagines the city of tomorrow. Within the history-laden walls of this traditional Lyonnais bistro, you’ll find the same authenticity as in the streets of the neighborhood: a city proud of its culture, its gastronomy, and its free-spirited youth.

In Lyon, the skaters of Place Tolozan and the Opera House are not at odds. Together, they tell the story of the same city: elegant, popular, creative, and profoundly vibrant.
